Pennsylvania to Host Unionwide CHIP Training

By Celeste Ryan

A Coronary Health Improvement Project (CHIP) “train the trainer” event will be held at Blue Mountain Academy in Hamburg, Pa., March 26-28. According to Katia Reinert, Faith Community Nursing coordinator for Adventist Healthcare, the weekend-long event is designed to train anyone in the Columbia Union interested in starting a health outreach program in their church or becoming part of an active CHIP team. She planned the event with Pennsylvania Conference Health Ministries director Lilly Tryon (pictured) with support from Ray Nelson, a pastor who also coordinates Chesapeake Conference and Columbia Union Health Ministries efforts. “It’s a very sound lifestyle-changing program that helps prevent and address diabetes, obesity, heart disease and a number of other chronic diseases,” says Tryon. “It provides a great opportunity for outreach to our communities.” The Parkersburg, W.Va., church in Mountain View recently hosted a four-week CHIP program and helped 10 participants lower their cholesterol 13 percent, blood pressure 12 percent, glucose 15 percent and lose 11 pounds.
