Camp Meeting Recap--Mountain View Conference

By Taashi Rowe

Mountain View Conference’s camp meeting started out with a bang, as a thunderstorm rolled through the camp ground at the start of its opening event--the dedication of its new youth conference center. The storm forced attendees indoors for the ribbon cutting for the newest building on the sprawling 302-acre campus of the Valley Vista Adventist Center in Huttonsville, W.Va.

During the ensuing dedication ceremony Larry Boggess, conference president; Victor Zill, treasurer; Randall Murphy, retired conference president and current camp manager; and others gave thanks to God for the new facility.

Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., MD, received the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in a recent ceremony at the White House. Carson is a member of Chesapeake Conference’s Spencerville church in Silver Spring, Md.

"I am humbled by President Bush's recognition of my work,” said Carson, a world-renowned neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore. He was in surgery when he heard the official news. "I am extremely grateful that he chose to honor me not only for my work as a neurosurgeon, but also for my efforts to improve the lives of America's youth. I am blessed to have the opportunity to pursue both paths, which I consider equally important."

3,500 Commemorate Great Controversy Vision

Some 3,500 church members and leaders gathered in Kettering, Ohio, recently for a special event commemorating the 150th anniversary of the vision that sparked Ellen G. White’s writing of The Great Controversy. Sponsored by the Ohio Conference, Kettering Adventist HealthCare, and the Columbia Union Conference, the Sabbath event was packed with inspiring messages, a variety of music, and well-planned programs for all ages.

“Today we have gathered to remember a vision---a distinct message---given by our Lord to a brand new movement a century and a half ago,” said Columbia Union president Dave Weigley opening the adult program. “Many years have past since that vision was given and all of the pioneers have since gone to their rest awaiting its final fulfillment. But the vision and the mission of that young movement have not changed. It is still our mission and purpose to give the clarion call of the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14 and prepare the world for the return of Jesus Christ.” READ MORE AND SEE PICTURES
