Chesapeake Member Named University's Acting President

E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, was recently appointed acting president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). The Chesapeake member, who has been asked to serve in this capacity until July 1, has been vice president for medical affairs at UMB and dean of its School of Medicine since September 2006. Before coming to Maryland, he was vice chancellor of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and dean of the its College of Medicine. He has also held faculty appointments at Temple University in Philadelphia and Yale University School of Medicine.

His research focuses on the effects of diabetes during pregnancy, birth defects, and prenatal diagnosis. A sought-after lecturer, Reece has authored 11 books in his area of expertise. He is an active member of the Spencerville church in Silver Spring, Md., where he co-leads Health Ministries, and serves as an elder and a Sabbath School superintendent. He is married to Sharon Reece, a visiting associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Law. The couple has three daughters.
