Washington Adventist Hospital Welcomes International Adventist Visitors

By Chaplains Chor-Kiat Sim and Mark Feldbush

Washington Adventist Hospital (WAH) in Takoma Park, Md., hosted two groups of international delegates who were in the United States to attend the 59th General Conference Session in Atlanta.

Three surgeons and two administrators from Rede Adventista Silvestre de Saude, a Seventh-day Adventist hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, stopped in with an interest in seeing the surgical suite. Chaplain Mark Feldbush also talked with them about the hospital relocation and took them to see Unit 1500 and the Emergency Department (ED). Maria Jurlano, director of 1500 and 2500, took the guests through her units and described the care patients receive. While in the ED, Drew White, MD, medical director, explained how patients were triaged and talked about protocols used to treat common complaints. The delegation was impressed with WAH’s quality care.

A couple of weeks later, a group of four leaders from Christian churches in China, led by Eugene Hsu, MD, General Conference vice president, visited WAH to learn about the growth of modern healthcare and to appreciate the hospital’s medical trip to Xian, China, in 1993. During their visit, they met Jere Stocks, WAH president; Ismael Gama, associate vice president of Mission Integration and Pastoral Care for Adventist HealthCare; and Chor-Kiat Sim, senior chaplain. Denise Stimpfle, nurse manager and one of the heart team members who traveled to western China, showed the guests the Cath Lab.

Washington Adventist Hospital is a part of the global outreach of the Adventist Church and cherishes its global perspective in providing compassionate care to their community.
