Columbia Union Churches Get Ready to Move!

Story by George Johnson
Published 9/21/2011

Nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese, increasing their risk for asthma, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep problems, depression and bullying. Some of the contributing factors are decreased exercise, bigger portion sizes, more refined foods and the inability for low-income families to access healthy foods.

First Lady Michelle Obama launched “Let’s Move” in February 2010 to help solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation, so that kids born today reach adulthood at a healthy weight. The Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America has joined some 50 other faith and community organizations in supporting this national initiative to fight the epidemic of childhood obesity by launching Adventists InStep for Life, an initiative to assist Adventist churches, schools and healthcare organizations in tackling the challenge of childhood obesity

As a part of the Adventists InStep for Life initiative, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America has set aside Sunday, September 25 as “Let’s Move! Day.” You can participate too! The following list shows how churches in the Columbia Union are participating:

(Fulton) The Capital Brazilian Temple is hosting a walk at 9 a.m. at Centennial Park in Ellicott City. More information contact Miriam Aleproti at

(Hagerstown) Vibrant Life magazine will host a 5K run/walk on the grounds of the Review and Herald Publishing Association at 8:30 a.m.

(Kettering) The Kettering church is planning a 5 K run/walk/crawl at 8 a.m. as a kick-off for this health initiative to reach 1 million miles! The 5K run will be held outdoors at the Kettering Recreation Center. Contact Mel Miller for more information at

(Philadelphia) Ebenezer church is planning Soul to Sole: 100 Days of Walking, an event for 100 souls to walk 100 miles in 100 days. September 25 is day 1, and will be celebrated with a sidewalk cafe and family fun, including free food samples and giveaways.

The Breath of Life Church is sponsoring a 5K walk across the Wilson Bridge beginning at 7:30 a.m. For more information contact Jean Francis at
