Wisbey to Leave CUC
By Scott Steward
Columbia Union College (CUC) president Randal Wisbey, D.Min., has accepted the invitation of La Sierra University (Calif.) to become their next president.
Wisbey, who announced his plans to the CUC Board of Trustees this morning, has served CUC for a combined 13 years-1985 to 1991 as chaplain and assistant professor of Religion, and since 2000 as president.
During his tenure, CUC has seen a net increase of students, faculty, and donations; developed and implemented an aggressive strategic plan; reorganized its School of Graduate and Professional Studies; renovated the women’s residence hall; worked effectively with the Maryland Independent College and University Association and the State of Maryland; celebrated its centennial, and is successfully working toward funding the construction of a much-needed music education building-its first new building in nearly 40 years.
In a letter shared with the campus, Wisbey wrote, "I am deeply proud of the faculty and staff who serve here, along with the students who complete this campus and help fulfill its mission each year. In turn, I have cherished the privilege of representing our wonderful academic community everywhere I go."
Responding to the news, Columbia Union Conference president and CUC board chair Dave Weigley said, "Dr. Wisbey has such a deep commitment to Adventist higher education. The college, board, and Columbia Union have benefited greatly from his forward-looking, forward-thinking leadership. This change provides a tremendous way for him to continue to serve the church and follow God’s call on his life."
Wisbey will begin work at La Sierra July 1. The board named a search committee of board members, faculty, staff, and students that will begin its work immediately. "We will carry on the vital mission of CUC, and I’m certain that God will provide the leadership we need for the future," Weigley said.
